Setting Up Your POP Email Address in Microsoft Outlook
This tutorial shows you how to set up Microsoft Outlook 2003® to work with
your e-mail account. This tutorial focuses on setting up Microsoft Outlook 2003,
but these settings are similar in other versions of Microsoft Outlook. You can
set up previous versions of Microsoft Outlook by using the settings in this
tutorial.
*NOTE: Replace references to "company.com" with your company / corporate domain name in the following instructions.
To Set Up Your E-mail Account in Microsoft Outlook
- In Microsoft Outlook, from the E-mail Accounts menu,
select Tools.
- On the E-mail Accounts wizard window, select Add a new e-mail
account, and then click Next.
- For your server type, select POP3, and then click Next.
- On the Internet E-mail Settings (POP3) window, enter your information
as follows:
- Your Name
- Your first and last name.
- E-mail Address
- Your email address.
- User Name
- Your email address, again.
- Password
- Your email account password.
- Incoming mail server (POP3)
- mail.company.com.
- Outgoing mail server (SMTP)
- mail.pomfret.com*
* If you are on a corporate network, please use mail.company.com or your corporate outgoing mail server. Personal / home users should use mail.pomfret.com.
Click More Settings.
- On the Internet E-mail Settings window, go to the
Outgoing Server tab.
- Select My outgoing server (SMTP) requires
authentication.
- Select Use same
settings as my incoming mail server.

- Go to the Advanced tab, check the box This server requires and encrypted connection (SSL) under Outgoing Server (SMTP). Do not change the Incoming Server settings.
- Change the Outgoing
server (SMTP) port to 465. Do not change the Incoming Server port.
- Click OK.
- If this is a second computer being setup for the same e-mail account, check the option Leave a copy of messages on the server, then check the option Remove from server after N days" Note that this change should also be made on other computers accessing this e-mail account.
Do not increase the number of days to greater than 30 unless you're sure your mailbox has enough storage space to hold the necessary email. 14 days is usually sufficient.
- Click Next.
- Click Finish.
